Again, not a very high bar in my opinion and an attitude picked up from Cotton. That's what it takes for Hank Hill to not conform to typical gender stereotypes. Good job, you find exactly one instance of Hank doing something feminine and it was for a man who was having a serious mental issue, had tried to commit suicide multiple times in the past, and was such a close friend that Hank literally got Bill tattooed on himself. The one obvious exception that I'm sure everyone is thinking of is the time he wore a dress while Bill was pretending to be Lanore. Hank often refuses to do things or participate due to this same sentiment. When they go to visit Peggy's mother in Montana Hank gets upset over the type of rental car they get and then gets even more upset when the cowboys laugh at him and call him a city slicker or something. Rodeo clowning, dog dancing, rose growing, theater performing, etc etc. This covers 80% or more of what Bobby does, some of which is mentioned earlier. Hank has a real problem with things that arent traditionally masculine. He gives Peggy a hard time for being from Montana, cries because he cant get native Texas plates, and spends a whole episode figuring out that even though he was born in New York he is still better than Peggy since there was a New York flag and not a Montana one at the Alamo. But Hank is obsessed with Texas and Texans. This is not Texas specific, and i would consider this to be an issue no matter what the state was. He also doesnt respect Peggy that much or that often, literally putting her job at risk in the episode where she works at Alamo Beer. They never openly talk about it, schedule it once a week, and say things like "i am removing my trousers" unironically. Hank and Peggy also have what I would consider a nightmare of a sex life. Obviously that saves the day in that episode, but I dont consider that a healthy relationship at all. Hank often lies about his actions and thoughts around Peggy, going so far as to trick her in to talking Spanish in the Mexican court. ![]() Hank has abandoned Peggy multiple times, like the Boggle tournament where a plot point is he has to change his mind and attitude to actually be supportive. Hank if very tied to traditional masculinity and power structures. Hank openly admits that if he knew Peggy couldnt cook back when they started dating, literally on the first date actually, they wouldnt be married. ![]() He was never set up for success in this area. And to be fair he didnt really learn much about being a dad from his own dad. Hank had many failings but I consider his role as a father to be his biggest failure. And as soon as Joseph starts needing a lacrosse partner Hank pawns Bobby off on Dale to help the kid who is doing sports instead of theater. He only likes Bobby's comedy when it involves propane or sports. And he starts dog dancing after giving Bobby a hard time because he finds out there is a computation. The very thing he gave bobby a hard time about minutes earlier. And to make matters worse in the rose competition episode as soon as the judge says the rose has had petals clipped and they loose Hank immediately brings up waby saby or however it's spelled. He is very rarely supportive of any of Bobby's hobbies, and when he is it is only because they align with his own interests and sense of competition instead of any actual desire to find out about his child. ![]() He is alienated from his own son, who he often makes fun of, gives a hard time, and talks bad about. I think Hank Hill is a better role model than 90% of the characters we see on tv, but I would never want to be like him. Everything related to King of The Hill!
